Co-op Calendar 

The biennial Point in Time (PIT) count, conducted by the Humboldt Housing and Homeless Coalition (HHHC), documents the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless person(s). The count is not scientific, but provides a picture of the homeless population at a specific point in time. The count takes place in communities across the U.S. on a single night. For Humboldt County, it will happen from February 28 - March 6.

The PIT (Point In Time) Count is a very important part of our community’s efforts to end homelessness.

• Gives information about homeless population over time that is not available anywhere else.
• Provides data on changes in characteristics of population used for planning services.
• Aids in evaluating success or failure of projects and initiatives related to homelessness.
• Provides data for cities, county, non-profits, service providers, housing developers to use when applying for grant funds.

This year, the HHHC is fortunate to have the California Center for Rural Policy (CCRP) assisting with the design, execution, data compilation and reporting of the count results, thanks to a grant from the North Coast Grantmaking Partnership and the generosity of CCRP. There will be designated “hubs” in multiple regions of the County. Volunteers in each region will report to and be coordinated by the Hub for that area.

If you or someone that you know wants to volunteer with the Count, please contact Wendy Choate at DHHS. Volunteers are needed for many tasks including clerical duties, going out to count homeless individuals, administering surveys to collect information, preparing refreshments, running materials to and between hubs, keeping coffee brewed for everyone involved and much, much more.

The Co-op is generously donating coffee beans and hot beverage cups for this important occurrence.
