Cooperative Community Fund 2023 Grant Recipient Highlight

Locally Delicious Farmer Fund

North Coast Co-op

North Coast Growers’ Association was awarded $3,000 from the Co-op’s Cooperative Community Fund (CCF) in June of 2023. Funds were for the Locally Delicious Farmer Fund which allows Food for People to contract with local, small farms for fresh produce that is donated to low-income community members. This benefits local farmers with their seasonal start-up costs, as well as families who receive this highly nutritious food.

The Locally Delicious Farmer Fund has been a growing program for 14 years. With the funds from the Co-op’s CCF Grant a total of 1,600 pounds of food was purchased from nine different local farmers. Produce included beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, lettuce, peaches, peppers, salad mix, summer squash, tomatoes, winter squash, salad turnips, and zucchini.

This program promotes the sustainability of our food system, both through farmer growing practices and the sustainable access to local food. It also aids in Community Development, by increasing the connections between farmers and our food bank, as well as developing the appreciation that community members have for local farmers when they receive their nutritious and delicious produce.
